Developing Regional Sport & Recreation Project

The Developing Regional Sport and Recreation project will be working in partnership with the Northern Territory Department of Sport and Recreation to develop a sustainable workforce of Community Sport and Recreation Officers throughout the Northern Territory.

Our project partners, Cross Cultural Consultants will lead the development of an Indigenous Workforce Development Strategy for the Sport and Recreation sector with a focus on recruitment, training and retention of Community Sport and Recreation Officers throughout the N.T. to fill the identified vacancies and to develop the skills of those in positions.

This project will commence with Building the capacity of the Indigenous Sports Unit (ISU) staff to work alongside CSROs and their communities in the development of the strategy. This training will be carried out first and then these officers will work under the guidance of CHARTTES Training Advisory Council and Cross Cultural Consultants to carry out consultation to bring back the information for the formulation of the strategy ans subsequent implementation and evaluation phases.

Capacity building will include training in areas such as:

  • Community Engagement and requesting and recording information in a Cross Cultural context
  • How to be effective in Cross Cultural mentoring and the supporting of Community Sport and Recreation officers (CSROs), and
  • Facilitating Groups in a Cross Cultural context

The Regions this strategy will cover will include all of the Remote Communities under the Shire councils throughout the Northern Territory. The project will assist those employers in accessing, developing and retaining Community Sport and Recreation Officers (CSROs) whose role it is to increase participation and improve the skill development in physical activity on communities. The recruitment and capacity building is a major priority within the strategy to increase the quality of life of Indigenous people in remote and regional communities, through access to sport and recreation activities.

The project is funded under the Indigenous Training for Employment Program ITEP (a partnership between the Northern Territory Government, Department of Business and Employment and the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations). The program is to assist Indigenous adults of working age (15 years and over) in regional and remote communities of the Northern Territory.
