The Industry
The Sport and Recreation industry covers four sectors Community Recreation (Leisure education, community recreation activities, and adaptive recreation) Fitness (Fitness services and fitness facilities) Outdoor Recreation (Outdoor clubs, holiday camps, recreation equipment hire, outdoor activities and parks and gardens Sport (Outdoor venues, indoor venues, sports administration, sports coaching, and sport officiating). The industry plays a key role in the commercial operations of many other industries through the promotion of outdoor activities in Tourism, Sport and Health. The industry covers a wide range of occupations including Coaching, Officiating, Athlete Support Services, Development, Career Orientated Participation, and Event Management.
Sport and Recreation generated around 1.2% of Australia's gross domestic product in 1994/95. Up to 275,000 people identify their main occupation as sport and recreation, with around 107,000 people employed in recreation occupations within the recreation industry. More than 828,000 volunteers work in the industry. The industry is dominated by small to medium enterprises, particuarly mirco businesses, and self-employed people. the workforce is young: 75% is aged under 45 years, and 28% is aged 15 to 24.
Forecast employment growth for the Sport and Recreation Industry is strong at 4% for the period to 2005-06. Significant employment growth is expected for fitness instructors, massage therapists, media-related occupations and business and information professionsals working in the recreation industry. Areas of the industry showing particuar promise include Eco-tourism/ Adventure-tourism, Sports tourism, Event management, and Fitness and Health-related services. The ageing population and increasing obesity are also contributing to demand for recrreation workers.

Covers coaching and instrucing, officiating, sports administration, events management across a wide range of sports including basketball, netball, rugby league and rugby union, equestrian, golf and swimming.
The Package covers job roles such as: coaching, officiating, sports developers and managers, career-oriented participants and athlete support service worker.There are many different sports contained in the Package, with a large number of units of competence. This has meant that there is considerable duplication as many of these are generic and similar. However, as they apply to different sports which are administrated by different sports associations and regulatory bodies, seperate units were requested.
In addition, as well as the specific sports, there are many "generic" skils required and these have been addressed through the importation and/or customisation of competency stardards from other industries.
Sport has a total of 20 Certificates ranging from Certificate 1 to Diploma.
